Fakta Kadayan-Brunei

Ketika aku sedang melayari internet, aku terbaca lah artikel ini di laman web Malaysiana 1 .

Kedayan Trivia

The Kedayan people and the Brunei people are two sides of a similar coin.

Kedayan is also spelt Kadayan and Brunei is also spelt Berunai.

Berunai refers to the tribe while Brunei refers to the country.

The Berunai traditionally live in water villages close to estuaries while the Kadayan traditionally live in the interior.

Nevertheless, the former originated from the latter. Legend has it that the younger brother of the first Kadayan king became the first king of the Berunai, later known as the Sultan of Brunei.

In 1907, Berunai formed 48pc of Brunei’s population and Kadayan formed 28pc.

Today, 29pc of Brunei’s population is Berunai and 19pc is Kadayan.

Kadayan and Berunai have always intermarried.

The Bisaya people of Brunei who are also found in Lawas, Sarawak as well as Sipitang, Beaufort and Kuala Penyu in Sabah are not Kadayan or Berunai but KadazanDusuns. The Bisaya (Beautiful People) form 11pc of Brunei’s population.

The Banjarese people of Banjarmasin in Indonesian Borneo are Kadayans. They are the largest tribe in Indonesian Borneo any day.

The Kadayans are the creators of the famous rice cake called Kelupis which is a delicacy in Sarawak.

About 80pc of Sabah’s Kadayans have kin in Brunei.

The Kadayans share a common musical instrument with the KadazanDusuns - the traditional bamboo and gourd trumpet called the Sompoton or Dukut.

Kadayans have settled in George Town, Penang long before the arrival of the British. One of the first Kadayans to settle in Penang was a prince named Pengiran Mat Salleh.

The prince and his followers founded the villages of Rawa, Melintang, Jelutong and Sungai Pinang in George Town.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi is descended from the Kadayan prince Pengiran Mat Salleh through his late mother Datuk Kailan Hassan.

The Sarawak Berunai (also called Sarawak Malay) community in Kuching, Bau, Lundu, Samarahan, Serian, Simunjan, Sri Aman, Lubok Antu, Betong and Saratok is of Kadayan origin.

Ulasan Ku :

-Pasal Banjar tu kadayan, aku tak pasti pula.
